Today, the Cardinals at the Vatican selected a new Pope. Jorge Mario Bergoglio (76) (pronounced Ber-GOAL-io) and he is to be called Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and the first non-European leader of the church in more than 1,000 years. For a time and with much love the from the Italian press, there was a lot of buzz about New York’s Cardinal Dolan as the favorite to become the first non-European Pope in more than a 1,000 years. Wow! A Pope from New York City. But, people are forgetting, New Yorker’s have had a Pope (well, of sorts) since 1984. OK, yeah, no puff of white smoke (well, not out of a chiminy over the Vatican anyway), no bells ringing in St. Peter’s Square but rather sirens from a squad car, but we got a Pope nonetheless, OK? And, he happens to be the Pope from one of my favorite New York City neighborhoods, and one of the most desirable neighborhoods to own an apartment or townhouse in all the world.
